smileplastics : : the company : : about us
In 1994 a range of sheets made from old plastics bottles was launched. Originally containing shampoo, detergent or milk, the bottles have been collected, sorted, flaked and thoroughly washed to remove any remaining contaminants. Looking like multi-coloured corn-flakes the pieces are then compressed into sheets by a process of heat and pressure, which retains the colours of the original bottles.
The sheet materials in our second product range are made from high impact polystyrene (HIPS) and are harder and more rigid than the sheets from bottles.
Smile Plastics has range called Jazz, made from tough, industrial plastic. This material was originally underground utility pipes and is available in Blue (water) and Yellow (gas) in any ratio. The standard product is 50/50.
Since then we have launched products made crushed CDs, plastic water bottles, banknotes, and Dapple, scrap from our own factory. In 2003 we introduced recycled Mobile Phones and Wellies.
Recycled plastics sheets have been used extensively all over the world including the Idče showroom and golf driving range roofing in Japan (Klein Dytham), Body Shop and Blanco fashion shops throughout Spain (Fern Green). The Science Museum, Design Museum, V & A and the Tate Gallery have all used it in different capacities.
In 2004 we started to trade in the Pacific Rim through IWI Green in Taiwan.
